Waterfalls

Waterfalls

There are at least 9 nice Waterfalls that are all within a 35-minute drive from Hopkins. Some are easier to get to than others.

All of the waterfalls have natural pools at their base, and they are perfect for swimming. So, bring your swimsuit or wear it under your clothing.

Most waterfalls require a hike, so closed toe shoes are helpful. Bring separate water shoes if necessary.

Bugs love the jungle and could love you. Bug spray isn't always effective, so consider a long sleeve shirt and pants. (The locals wear rubber boots, long pants, long sleeve shirts and undershirts when in the jungle.)

Here are the places near Hopkins to experience waterfalls:
  1. Billy Barquedier National Park - Entrance fee is $4 USD per person. It is about 45 minutes from Hopkins, and it is about a 15 or 20 minute moderate hike (one way).  You go up a little bit then descend down to a creek, you must then wade the creek about .5 miles on slippery rocks. Then you get to the Waterfall and natural pool.
  2. Mayflower Bocawina National Park - Entrance fee is $5 USD per person. It is about 30 minutes from Hopkins. Map near visitors center - take a photo of it.
    1. Antelope Falls - A strenuous trail also containing stairs, a rope section, and a nice scenic overlook. You can also go waterfall repelling here by tour.
    2. Bocawina Falls - A moderate to strenuous trail at the far end of the park actually takes you past several waterfalls, each with a natural pool to swim in: Lower Bocawina Falls, Upper Bocawina Falls, Big Drop Falls, and Peck Falls.
  3. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary - Entrance fee is $5 USD per person. This is the jaguar preserve that is about 30 minutes from Hopkins. Map near visitors center - take a photo of it.
    1. Tiger Fern double waterfall - Steep ascent and descent to the waterfalls, but there are benches to rest along the way.
    2. Ben's Bluff
  4. Mayan Sky Destinations - Entrance fee is $10 USD per person. It is about 25 minutes from Hopkins. There is a staircase directly to the waterfall, so it's really easy to get there. The waterfall and natural pool are beautiful, and there is a picnic table at the water's edge - great spot for a picnic lunch.
