Cave Tours by Foot

Cave Tours By Foot

Belize is riddled with caves. There are some you can tour by canoe or by tube, but here on this page we will be talking about Caves you walk into.

The caves in Belize are rugged. There are no paved paths like in other commercial caves, and no lighting other than the headlamp on your helmet.  These are real spelunking experiences.

Lets look and compare at the three caves you would tour by foot that are near Hopkins.  These are:
  1. ATM Cave - This one is very wet and it could get rained out because of the rivers you have to cross getting there and also the water level in the cave could raise.  You have to swim into it.  This cave is the #1 sacred cave in the world according to National Geographic.
    1. You can expect to pay about $100-$200 US per person to go here.  That would include transportation, park fees, etc.
    2. You will need to bring some thick socks because you will have to take off your shoes to go to the sacred area at the end.
    3. You must hire a specially certified guide to go here.
    4. You need to be physically fit and able to swim.  This is a spelunking trip, though it's less technical than Crystal Cave.
    5. You MUST NOT bring a camera into the cave.
    6. You will see incredible rock formations, lots of Mayan artifacts, and the "Crystal Maiden".
  2. Crystal Cave - This cave is relatively dry and you are mostly hiking on slick clay on boulders most of the time.  The cave is absolutely beautiful.  Here are a few things to consider.
    1. You can expect to pay about $100-$150 US per person to go here. That would include transportation, park fees, etc.
    2. This cave feels much hotter than ATM because you are not wet.  You will sweat a lot.
    3. The cave is slick.  I am not really sure what the best shoes would be, but not hiking boots and not flip flops.
    4. You need to be pretty fit because this is a spelunking trip.
    5. You can bring your camera to this cave, but PLEASE be careful not to drop it on anything.
    6. You will see amazing rock formations, and many Mayan artifacts.
  3. Mayan World Destinations Cave - This dry cave actually has staircases to enter and exit the cave, but the rest is natural.  It's not very big, and it's pretty easy to walk through - you spend maybe an hour there on the horseback riding trip.
    1. The cost for caving and horseback riding is about $30 US.  This Cave could be hiked to or you can do the Horseback riding trip and stop and visit the cave along the way.
    2. It's not as spectacular as the other caves mentioned, but it is cool to check out and does have some Mayan artifacts.
